Adequate child care provision refers to having enough licensed child care spaces within an area for a given population of children. [1] When children are in quality early childhood programmes they experience positive impacts on their development such as improved social skills, literacy and numeracy, and resilience.[2] Research shows that children who participate in quality child care are less likely to repeat grades and more likely to complete high school. [2] Families who have access to quality child care programmes are more likely to have parents who participate in the workforce, increasing family earnings.[2] Overall the research is clear that quality licensed child care programmes are essential and help to build strong personal, academic and economic foundations for children and their families.
