Early Development Instrument/ Kindergarten Parent Survey Report: 2011/12
This report provides insight into the most vulnerable children in our community by using data from the 2006, 2009, and 2012 Early Development Instrument (EDI) as well as data from the 2012 and Kindergarten Parent Survey (KPS).
The EDI is a population-based measure carried out every three years in partnership with local school boards to collect information about the learning readiness of senior kindergarten students. The results reflect children's early experiences and can be used to plan, improve and enhance services for both preschool and school-aged children.
The KPS is a survey the parents of the senior kindergarten children who have been assessed with the above mentioned EDI to further learn about their children's early environment and experiences. The KPS questionnaire asks parents about their children's health status, child care experiences, demographic background, family and neighbourhood environment and prior school experiences.
Using statistical testing the data is determined to have either a positive or negative linear trend or to not have a linear trend at all. The 2012 data is also tested in relation to the Ontario 2006 baseline data to determine statistical significance. The report also investigates social determinants of health and their association to vulnerability on the Early Development Instrument.
