Sexual activity relates to a person's sexual behaviours. Sexual activity can include a wide range of behaviours, however for this indicator, it refers specifically to sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse is defined as oral, vaginal or anal sex. During adolescence, young people often engage in sexual activity for the first time. When young people engage in early sexual activity it can result in unintended outcomes, such as getting a sexually transmitted infection or the potential for an early pregnancy.
Grade 10 youth who report ever having sexual intercourse |
About the MeasureThis measure is collected from the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph (WDG) Youth Survey that gathers self-reported well-being data from grade 7 and 10 students. The survey asks only grade 10 students about their participation in sexual intercourse. Key FindingsThe percentage of students who report having engaged in sexual intercourse remained constant between the 2014-15 and 2017-18 surveys. More grade 10 students in Wellington and Dufferin reported engaging in sexual intercourse than students in Guelph. Non-binary (46%) students were more likely to report having engaged in sexual intercourse than males (26%) and females (22%) (not shown on graph). Data at the municipal level can be found in the downloadable Excel file at the bottom of this page.
